PHANTAFIELD

Electrical & system control engineer

Drive atomic-scale manufacturing equipment from automated to intelligent

Full-time Santa Clara, CA Mid-Senior

About PhantaField

PhantaField is advancing humanity with atomic-scale technology. We specialize in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor materials and the proprietary manufacturing equipment to grow and fabricate them — including low-temperature MOCVD systems that enable 3D monolithic integration of DRAM on logic, delivering over 10× the memory bandwidth of HBM. Founded in Silicon Valley and backed by Professor Chenming Hu, inventor of the FinFET, PhantaField uniquely masters both material growth and device fabrication. As our equipment grows in complexity and intelligence, we need engineers who can own the full electrical and control stack — from power distribution to machine learning — and take our systems from prototype to production.

The role

You'll lead PhantaField's electrical architecture design, control scheme development, and host-side software integration for our atomic-scale manufacturing equipment. This is a role that spans hardware and software: you'll design power and signal systems that meet SEMI safety standards, write the host-side automation logic, build the operator interfaces, and deploy machine learning to make the equipment smarter over time. You'll support the full development lifecycle from prototype through mass production, working at the intersection of precision hardware and intelligent software in a way that few roles offer.

What you'll do

ELECTRICAL

Lead the design of the equipment's electrical architecture — power distribution, signal control, grounding, and safety shielding. Ensure all designs strictly adhere to SEMI (S2/S8/F47), CE, and UL standards. Perform component selection and integration for high-precision sensors, servo systems, and heating modules. Maintain electrical schematics, BOMs, and technical manuals.

HOST SOFTWARE

Develop host-side software logic and manage system-wide automation control workflows. Collaborate with PLC and embedded controllers to ensure efficient data communication and logic synchronization across subsystems. Build robust, real-time control pipelines using C#, C++, or Python with industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, Modbus, TCP/IP).

HMI & UI/UX

Design and optimize the equipment's human-machine interface. Focus on intuitive operation logic and professional visual standards that give operators an efficient, error-resistant experience. You'll own the interface from workflow design through implementation — this isn't a hand-off-to-design role.

MACHINE LEARNING

Explore and deploy machine learning algorithms — anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, process parameter compensation — to enhance equipment stability and process consistency. This is where PhantaField's equipment evolves from automated to genuinely intelligent.

INTEGRATION

Participate in full-system integration and debugging — troubleshooting complex issues that span hardware to software. You'll work across process engineering, mechanical engineering, and controls to bring systems online and keep them running at production quality.

What we're looking for

Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Experience: 3+ years in the semiconductor, precision instrument, or high-end automation industry.

Electrical design: Proficiency in EPLAN or SolidWorks Electrical for schematics and 3D wiring design. Working knowledge of SEMI, CE, and UL safety standards; hands-on certification experience preferred.

Control programming: Expertise in at least one host-side development language (C#, C++, or Python). Familiarity with industrial communication protocols — EtherCAT, Modbus, TCP/IP.

UI/UX: Ability to plan and implement professional industrial interfaces using design and development tools.

Nice to have: Experience applying ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn) to industrial hardware. Hands-on experience with vacuum or high-temperature equipment such as MOCVD, PECVD, PVD, or etching systems.

Compensation & benefits

Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience and skill set.

Growth: Compensation adjustment system based on skill advancement, technical achievements, and career progression.

Sales incentive: Performance-based bonuses tied to equipment sales success — directly aligning technical impact with personal reward.

Equity: Competitive stock option package for key technical roles.

Benefits: Employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance. 401(k) with company match. Flexible PTO. Modern research and office environment.

Why PhantaField

You won't just maintain equipment someone else designed — you'll define the electrical and control architecture for a new class of semiconductor manufacturing tools built around 2D TMD materials. The equipment you build will grow the atomic layers that replace silicon. You'll bridge hardware and software daily, working alongside process and mechanical engineers in an R&D-first environment backed by the inventor of the FinFET. If you want to build the machines that build the future of compute, this is the role.
